Some Front-End Stuff

2025-12-18

Every now and then, I like to use this space to share stuff that's more relevant than my lame jokes. With that in mind, here are a few really good front-end dev links that I stumbled onto this week:

  • 6 CSS Snippets Every Front-End Developer Should Know In 2025
I'm embarrassed to say that even though it's the end of 2025, I wasn't aware of these yet... but now that I am, I'm really looking forward to using page transitions and springy easing animations in particular.
  • Default styles for h1 elements are changing
Mixed feelings about this one, tbh. One the one hand, I (almost) always apply custom classes to my heading elements, so I'm not too concerned; but on the other, it was nice to know that browsers had a fallback mechanism in place to make it visually obvious which heading was which if I didn't, and that's a behavior this old dog is now going to have to un-learn.
  • The <select> element can now be customized with CSS
So far, this feature is Chrome-only, but once it rolls out to other browsers, it'll be really cool to be able to finally apply fancy styling to dropdowns without adding a ton of JS for a custom widget, while also retaining the built-in accessibility features of a real actual dropdown.
  • You're not a front-end developer until you've...
As the author themselves says, this one is more fun than informative, but I nodded my head so hard at this list that I gave myself whiplash.
